Earliest documentations of CBD:

  • During 2737BC Chinese Emperor Sheng Nung regularly used cannabis-induced tea to treat many aliments including rheumatism, gout, malaria and memory.
  • Queen Victoria is believed to have used it to deal with menstrual cramps during 1800’s.

CBD continued to be used down the years but due to advancement in modern medicine and lack of scientific evidence CBD didn’t gain much recognition.

Since when did CBD stir the interest of researchers?

Irish physician William B.O’Shaughnessy carried out a study on the cannabis plant’s therapeutic benefits during 1839. His study covered the rudimentary effects of the plant and using it as an anesthetic.

Over a century after O’Shaughnessy’s study, the presence of compounds in the cannabis plant was discovered.

  • British Chemist Robert S. Cahn identified the structure of cannabinoids in 1940.
  • American chemist Roger Adams isolated Cannabidiol two years later and made history.
  • Walter S. Loewe began testing CBD on mice and rabbits in 1946. His study revealed that no observable changes regarding behaviour were noted.
  • Raphael Mechoulam identified the CBD’s stereochemistry in 1964 which paved the way for understanding benefits of individual cannabinoids.

Mechoulam is referred as the godfather of modern cannabis since his studies proved CBD is non-intoxicating and has countless medical benefits.

With more research being conducted, the 1978 Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act was passed which acknowledge the medical benefits of cannabis. During the 1980’s Dr. Mechoulam and his team conducted studies on 8 persons for using CBD to treat epilepsy. Regular use of CBD was proved to lower the occurrence of seizures.

Unfortunately, it was not seen as a breakthrough due to the prevailing stigmas about cannabis. However, in less than a decade, more researches were conducted and there was more understanding about the cannabinoid structure. Gradually it started gaining popularity in the United States.

CBD’s rise in the United States:

California became the first state that legalized medicinal marijuana in 1996. In the following years 7 other countries followed suit. CBD was accessible to more people and researchers expanded their studies. Those who used CBD started sharing their experiences on how it helped them with more serious ailments.

The stigma slowly started fading as more medicinal benefits were exposed and it wasn’t considered controversial anymore. CBD has ever since become a symbol of hope due to its positive impact in peoples’ lives and its popularity continues to rise.
